How many pairs of shoes did you go through?

8.

Not as many as I would have thought.

What gear did you bring with you?

The gear I carried varied a little bit over the course of the trip. For example, some things I thought I could carry early on got left behind because I realized they weren't essential. Also, as the weather changed so to did the clothes I carried.

That being said, this is a list of what I was usually carrying:

  • Camera/USB cord
  • Battery charger
  • 10 pieces of paper and pen
  • Provincial map
  • Toothbrush and paste
  • Small towel
  • 2-3 days' food
  • Rain jacket and pants
  • 2 pair socks and underwear
  • 2 t-shirts
  • 1 long-sleeved t-shirt
  • 1 hooded sweatshirt
  • 1 pair cargo pants
  • Toque and mittens
  • Sleeping matt
  • Sleeping bag
  • Tent
  • 3 bottles of water
  • 30 feet of rope (actually, more like twine)
  • Rosary
  • New Testament

What did you eat?

For the most part, my daily menu looked like this:

  • 1/2 loaf of bread
  • 2-3 Poptarts (Smores and strawberry milkshake flavours were my favourite)
  • 4-5 granola bars
  • 4-5 packages of instant oatmeal (mixed in my mouth with water...mmmm)

Depending on the day, I might also pickup some other treats like candy bars, nuts, cereal bars or fresh fruit (if I could find it).

For the first half of the trip, I ate at restaurants very rarely. Later on, however, I started to have problems with my stomache and had to vary my diet a little. At that point I made a habit of grabbing a nice greasy breakfast at a roadside diner once every couple days. When I did have a restaurant breakfast, I was sure to load up on condiments (free/extra fat and calories) :)

I am embarrassed to admit that I was unsuccessful at curbing my coffee habit on this trip. Usually, I had a large coffee (with tonnes of cream and sugar, of course) once a day .
