"Peace, peace, peace - and only peace!" |
|||||||||||||||||||||
In six words, Mother Mary's visits to Medjugorje are about "peace, peace, peace - and only peace!" This, in fact, was the very first message She delivered in Medjugorje. Why the emphasis on peace? Quite simply, it's because God is a "God of love and peace" (RSV, 2 Corinthians 13:11) and so it is His will that peace - not conflict - fill His world. Sadly, however, we have freely chosen against peace and, as it were, against God. This choice we make every day, in countless ways: We hate ourselves. We estrange family members. We gossip about friends. We take up arguments with our neighbours. We alienate members of our community. We discriminate against blocs of our countrymen. We withhold aid from other countries. We mutilate our natural world. We ignore God. In all these ways, and so many more, we choose for conflict and against peace. And, although we might not see it, these decisions are causing us great pain and sorrow - both in this life and in the next. Mother Mary knows all too well the pain and sorrow our "anti-peace" stance is causing us. She has come, then, as a loving Mother, trying to show us a better way; She has come to remind us that "blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God" (RSV, Matthew 5:9).
